Multiple Sclerosis...That something other people get. I never even really knew what it was, I just
remember when Montel Williams was diagnosed and people talked about him
possibly losing the ability to walk.
After a few years of feeling pretty poorly, I was at a show choir
contest when I got what I thought was a migraine, and started losing my
sight. Within 4 days, I was completely
blind in my right eye. After some tests,
I was told I had a condition that could be a precursor for MS, but the Doctor
assured me I would not have MS. As I
continued to feel awful and tried to find answers, I found myself in the office
of Dr. Emily Riser, right here in Homewood.
After a WHOLE lot of testing, those dreaded words came out of her mouth,
“You have MS”. I thought I was prepared
for that statement, but how can you prepare for something like that? This wasn’t someone saying you have the flu,
here is your Tamiflu, instead it was “we will try these shots 3 days a week in
hopes to not progress”. A disease that
will be with me the rest of my life...This was on December 22, and was NOT what
I asked Santa for!
Fast forward to now. We
all know the value of educating yourself, and the same is said about Multiple
Sclerosis. It is much like when you buy
a new car, in that you never see that model and color until you buy it, then
every third person is driving that same car.
I didn’t know anyone with MS. So
I thought. Now I hear of people that are
successfully living with the disease every day.
Well, here we are...Patriot Point opportunity time. On April 11th, the 2015 MS Walk is happening
at Regions Field. There will be a ton of
amazing entertainment. The best part is,
for you non-runners, it is NOT a run, but a walk designed to being awareness to
MS. There are so many amazing things the
MS society does for MS patients and their families, and I would love for you to
be a part of this. I have started a
team, that I would love for you to join.
It doesn’t cost anything to be a part of the team, the goal is to get your
friends and family to support the cause with donations to our team. I wasn’t all that excited about this event
until I went to the kick off meeting for the Walk. It was truly amazing to see the impacted
lives first hand!
