Meeting Man vs. Moving Man

Here's a tale of two administrators.  This week the administrative team at HHS began a pedometer challenge to determine how many steps each individual principal takes during the school day.  I decided to only allow the steps counted between 7:30am and 3:30pm to factor in to the total steps.  So far, we have results from Latta Johnston and Matt Kiser.  Latta wore the pedometer on a day when he hosted our "INstructional" meetings which created a seated environment for him for most of the day-step count=1600.   Matt wore the pedometer on a day when his duties involved moving around the building, monitoring student behavior and other tasks which allowed for a high step count= 9200.  If Latta relied on just his normal daily activities to maintain fitness, he would struggle to prevent the chronic diseases associated with limited movement.  Instead, Latta starts his day with a five mile run.  Matt, covered almost that same distance in his normal daily activities.  10,000 steps = 5 miles, which is a good goal for fitness.  Matt also supplements his day with scheduled exercise.  What does your day look like in regard to "Movement"?  Do you supplement your normal physical activities with the 30 minutes of exercise the CDC recommends? (If you missed last week's video, go back and watch it!)  Next week we will start the Patriot Point Challenge.  I will be visiting each school during the month of September to explain the details of this year-long competition to determine which work site averages the most time spent exercising.  There are two very important adjustments to the competition.  First, instead of an hour of exercise equalling one Patriot Point, we will allow 30 minutes = 1 Patriot Point.  This coincides with the CDC's recommendation for 30 minutes of scheduled exercise six out of seven days for an adult.  Your goal this year is to average 6 or more Patriot Points per week.    The Patriot Point week begins on MONDAY and continues through SUNDAY night.  The second adjustment to the competition involves scheduled exercise.  In the past, some of our participants have counted physical activity as part of the Patriot Point Challenge.  This year please focus on scheduled exercise.  Scheduled exercise is time that you carve out of your day to focus on fitness.  Walking your dog, or chicken does count.  (Can you guess which teacher in the English department at HHS has pet chickens?)  So start counting up those Patriot Points on Monday morning, September 3rd thru Sunday night September 9th.  You will get the hyperlink to the Patriot Point tally card on Monday, September 10.    If you are new to our school system, please talk to a veteran or email me if you are confused.  I'll be at your school to explain the details soon, but wanted to get the competition started asap!

Please click on the calendar for details of upcoming races and fitness opportunities.

ZUMBA announcement:  Thanks to Ms. Simpson and Edgewood-Zumba is coming back!  Stay tuned for the scheduled time frame/space.  The class will require a minimum participation of 10, so please take advantage of this opportunity to earn Patriot Points.
