O'Henry's Walk, Guinness World Record, Homecoming and Race for the Cure

Busy week for The Movement.  We started with our 2nd Annual Walk to O Henry's.  Wednesday, we participated in Michelle Obama's Let's Move Guinness World Record Jumping Jack attempt (above picture from HHS, combined numbers from HHS and HMS =over 1700 participants).   Tomorrow, we will finish our week with Race for the Cure.   Thanks to everyone who Moved this week at our events.  Not only have we improved our personal health and wellness with our activities, but we have also modeled wellness for our students.  Win/Win!  While our group efforts are important, the individual efforts you make daily continue to make a huge impact.  This morning after Spin class, one of the participants, who happens to be a former student/HHS Graduate, came up to me and said, "Coach Spurlock, I almost didn't come today, but I heard Becky Salls in my head and she made me get here!".  Another instance of encouragement happened recently at HMS, when a teacher suggested a "Moving Meeting" instead of sitting and waisting an opportunity to earn Patriot Points.   Finally, HBOE employees walked to the homecoming parade instead of driving!  Those type of lifestyle changes are the small decisions leading up to big results.

Winner, Winner, Chicken Dinner-I will be surprising a teacher this afternoon.  THE POSTER CHILD Surprise Attack will occur after lunch.  I'll be running in a classroom, with a gift certificate to a Homewood restaurant.  This week our Surprise Attack is awarded to a first time poster of Patriot Points.

This week The Patriot Point Challenge trophy will continue to rest comfortably at HBOE.  Leading the Way is our weekly winner.  Highlights of the week=HMS improved participation by 5%, Hall Kent improved by 7%.  Top two finishers Leading the Way 21, Shaping up Shades 19

Please check the calendar on The Movement Blog for opportunities to Move next week.

"Platelets, do your job!"

Ella, a student at Edgewood and daughter of Kristi Dutton, stared at her hands after a tumble from her bike and asked her platelets to get busy.  Scuffed hands hasn't slowed her down from her daily request to her parents to GET MOVING to the trail so she can ride her new bike.  When Kristi explained that Edgewood students have been studying blood in one of the science classes, it gave even more clarity to the impact we have as educators and motivators.  Ella has made a connection between academics and fitness.  Even more impressive-Ella hasn't allowed her scuffed hands to stop her from continuing to MOVE!

Patriot Point Challenge Update:  Congrats to Shades Cahaba for their win last week.  Edgewood came in a close second and HMS has almost doubled participants and tripled points.  Big Scoreboard totals are even closer!  Each week adds to the Big Scoreboard-Yearly winner determined by Big Scoreboard results.  COMPETE each week!

Heart Health and Ms. Grace

Hope you all survived the power outages and heavy rains.  I lost a huge sweet gum tree but gained a wonderful lesson about my heart.  The sweet gum came crashing down, landing across the street and into Ms. Grace's azaleas.  Ms. Grace is a retired Bham Southern professor who now volunteers weekly at the local jail teaching the basics of math to inmates.  She is very independent even after hip replacement and heart surgery.  When the tree fell, the rain continued.  I looked out the window and saw Ms. Grace out there pulling branches away from her "Midnight Blue Azaleas".  She finally gave in for the afternoon and (as I later found out later) began calling Mayor McBrayer, the city sanitation and anyone else she could think of who might come out to take care of the tree (and her Azaleas).  The following day, Mayor McBrayer paid two visits and eventually the tree was removed.  I came home from school at 3:45 to find Ms. Grace, still out there raking leaves and pulling branches away from her precious flowers.  After a day at work, most of us want to do nothing more than to unwind just for a few minutes, in silence.   Thanks to the encouragement from a dear friend, I put on my boots and overalls, walked across the street and began helping Ms. Grace.  She chatted non-stop for the entire two hours, we talked about teaching, her new career at the jail, the storm and of course... her azaleas.  Those two hours were the best "heart" workout I had all week.  Grace is good for your heart...

Other great heart reports:    120/80 is the suggested optimal range for blood pressure.  One of our HCS employees shared with me his annual doctor visit results for BP at 123/78- pretty close to perfect.  This certain employee has one of the most stressful jobs in education but has made exercise and good nutrition a priority.  Are you stressed?  When is the last time you have had your BP checked?  Do you exercise?  We have a nurse in every school.  Walk down there and ask if she could give you a quick BP checkup!

"Are you a runner?"  Allison Glover would have answered NO to this question just a few months ago.  BUT, because of encouragement from Rebecca Shields, Allison participated in Mercedes Marathon, The Spirit Scamper, Race to the Courthouse 5K and Are UABle (where she placed second in her age division).  This week, Allison was at the docs office for a checkup, the doc looked at the results of her EKG and asked, "Are you a runner, you have such a strong heart?"  Her answer........ "YES".

So, How is your heart?  Do you need some Grace, some exercise, some better nutrition?  The Movement offers opportunities for your heart and more!  Check out the calendar on the blog site (click on the hyperlink to view) for the Movement Schedule of classes.

Komen 5K is 5 weeks away.  Do you want to train to walk or run?  Melonie McBrayer will be meeting on the Shades Creek Greenway each week on Thursdays after school to help you prepare for this event.  Please respond to this blog if you are interested.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Patriot Points will be emailed on Monday!  You will get and email from your Patriot Pack Leader explaining the process for reporting your Patriot Points.  Remember one hour of exercise = ONE Patriot Point.

Have a great weekend and Keep Moving!

Feel free to take a look at our website, rockyourbodystudio.com, for more information, or talk to me.  As a teacher, our brain works 24/7, which can exhaust us mentally, emotionally, and physically. Dance Trance has been an outlet for me since 1993, and I can't imagine not having it in my life.  I agree with Nivada that in order to keep moving, you have to get moving.  I hope to see you on the dance floor.    MDV

Happy New Year!

Each new school year is a chance to set goals, make a plan and take action toward improving your wellness.  The Movement is your resource to help you achieve all of your goals.  Last weekend, eight HCS employees participated in the Mountain Lakes Triathlon.  Four of the eight were first-timers in the triathlon experience.  We are happy to report that we all survived and one of our participants, Rebecca Singleton, placed first in her age division!  What is your challenge this year?  Participate in the Mercedes Marathon?  PR (personal record) a 5K? Or simply, make a commitment to fitness and better nutrition.  Whatever your challenge is, your co-workers in HCS are there to support you and join you in your endeavor.

I have big news...... IronTribe has agreed to train 20 of our employees on-site at HHS.  We are in the planning stages, but I need your input immediately.  If you have any interest in CrossFit please shoot an email to me asap.  The Tribe will only accept 20 HCS employees for our on-site class.  Your email will simply let me know that we have "interest" in this level of training.  I will keep you posted as planning continues.

Please read The Movement Blog weekly, and check out the calendar to find out what fitness classes are available.

Next week's schedule:

Do you know success?

I have asked permission to share a success story from one of our employees.  The stats are obvious.  After a check-up at the doctor in the beginning of the summer break, this employee has this to report.  Blood pressure=down, Cholesterol=down, Weight=down.  As for the "ups".  Fitness level=up, Activity level=up,  Number of training days per week=up, Mileage covered and pace during walks=up.  Overall feeling and energy level UP!  Success happens daily every time each of you go for a walk, wake up early for a morning workout, choose to not have the entire basket of chips and salsa, or maybe chose to hydrate with water on a consistent basis.  If you are missing your chance to know success, start NOW choosing to succeed.  It's a personal journey we all face as we make our small decisions throughout the day.  Choose wisely.

Update on the Spin bikes:  Still on hold as repairs are necessary to keep us safe.  I'll let you know as soon as we are up and Spinning.

Special Thanks to the employees and students who came to Walk with the Mayor.  You can see an interview with Mayor McBrayer and Jeh Jeh Pruitt of Fox 6 detailing the expansion plan for our Shades Creek Greenway on the Fox 6 website.  Shades Creek Greenway is part of a 100 mile expansion plan which will connect most of Jefferson County.  More exciting news- Red Mountain Park a 1100 acre urban park is in the process of being built conveniently located adjacent to the city of Homewood.

Check it out here:  http://www.redmountainpark.org/

oh yeah, DO YOU KNOW SUCCESS?  Meet Ms. Pam Laseter-SHE is success

Keep moving.

Spin Calendar, Basketball and Walk with the Mayor

Just a quick update on the summer MOVEMENT opportunities.  Spin is still on hold as we are waiting for replacement parts/service on several of our bikes.  If you would like to get in a cardio workout, feel free to hop on an elliptical or the stairclimber anytime between the hours of 8am-noon Monday-Friday in the Spin room.  Of course there is no excuse to not get in cardio, it's as simple as lacing up those shoes and heading out to the trail or your neighborhood.  Careful with the hot temps though!  Be sure to hydrate and try to get your training done early morning or late afternoon.

6am Basketball:  We will start up this Thursday, June 9th.  Be at HHS for Summer Hoops.  We have 4 confirmed All-Stars for this Thursday.  LaToya P., Tyler B., Megan L., and Dexter L.  GET THERE and join the fun.

Walk with Mayor McBrayer:  Tuesday, June 14th 6:30am (weather permitting) Meet at the trail head on the Lakeshore Trail aka Shades Creek Greenway, parking lot near the Columbiana/Greensprings entrance.  We will join Jeh Jeh Pruitt and Mayor McBrayer promoting healthy lifestyles and walking in our Homewood Community.  The Shades Creek Greenway plan is to connect the existing trail to West Homewood park.  Be there to support making this dream a reality.

Keep Moving.

Have you considered all of the Movement opportunities we miss because of the convenience factor of our everyday life?  My bike commute to work is only 12 minutes.  Another Mover/Biker is Mr. Laeri Boyd.  His morning routine includes biking to work.  You might catch a glimps of Biker Boyd on Euclid or Montevallo Road or Jemison Trail.  I challenge you to park farther from the entrance of the grocery store.  Or maybe, just walk to the grocery store when you have just a few things on the shopping list.  Find Movement opportunities in everyday life.  Summer is almost here and The Movement calendar is being updated.  Please click on the calendar posted on The Blog to find out when Spin classes will be available.  Currently the Spin bikes are shut down for yearly maintenance.  We will hopefully be up and Spinning the week of June 6th.  If you are interested in summer pick-up basketball, please respond with your day of the week and time of day request.  Thanks for participating in The Movement 2010-11.

Wellness Weekend =)

I don't even know where to start with this blog entry.  I guess "Thank YOU" is the most important thought that continues to pop up in my mind after our year-end celebration.  Thanks to an administration who understands the importance of wellness.  Thanks to employees who have made lifestyle changes to make Homewood City Schools an even better place to work.    Thanks to all the first-timers on the 5K and 10K.  Thanks to all the veterans who were out there on the course setting PR's.  Thanks to all the students, such as a high school student who recruited ten of her friends and family members to join her in the Spirit Scamper.  The student I am referring to struggles to speak English, but has agreed to lead a student group at HHS who will join The Movement for the upcoming school year.  She and her Movement team will be focused on student-involvement.  Thanks to our fine arts department and cheerleaders for providing entertainment on the course.  Thanks to the NHS for the H20. Most of all, thanks to all the volunteers who gave of their time to make The Fitness Fair and Spirit Scamper a huge success.  The Patriot Point challenge resulted in a very close finish.  HHS squeaked by SCES for the win, by a small margin-only three points.  Thanks to all of you who reported points weekly and special thanks to our Patriot Pack Leaders for motivating us to MOVE!  The Golden Shoe award for students goes to Hall Kent elementary school.  Congratulations to Hall Kent and special thanks to the PE staff for recruiting those Fun Runners!  I will meet with the Trak Shak today at 10am to finalize the employee Golden Shoe award and the individual awards.  Once again......... THANKS and most importantly........ KEEP MOVING.

We got CLAS!

Congratulations to HHS for being recognized as a CLAS Banner School.  Yesterday at the awards luncheon I listened to all of the wonderful programs across our state.  Robotics in Decatur City Schools, one-to-one initiative at Piedmont, ESL programming in Russellville City Schools, so many great programs, and of course mainly focused on student academic achievement.  When Dr. Maddox, Dr. Cleveland and I were asked to come up to the podium and be recognized, I was unsure of exactly what to say about our Wellness Program.  The Movement is so much more than just HHS.  It's so much more than student achievement alone.  The Movement is about you, those of you reading this blog.  Those of you who have decided to make lifestyle changes that you model for your students and families.  You make THE MOVEMENT succeed.  Thanks to all you have done to give us CLAS.

Patriots with a Purpose

Education is the greatest profession in the world.  The payoff is huge, but usually doesn't get cashed in until long after our seniors leave the halls of Homewood City School System.  On a usual day, teachers are charged with pushing and pulling students in a direction that sometimes our kids are hesitant to go.  BUT, for one day, a very special day coming very soon all HCS Patriots will unite for a Purpose.  It started with a simple thought from David Jones to me in a Spin class in a small room in the back of the weight room at HHS on how to raise money for the American Cancer Society and honor Ms. Bagwell.  It spread to a faculty of employees agreeing to spend a day Spinning and an administration who supported our effort and a student body who donated $3000 of pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters in one day.  It is now a school system united to Bike for Bagwell, celebrate a pep rally, walk to Homewood Park-Relay for Life and continue to walk laps to honor those who are fighting, who have fought and all of the caregivers.  This is our one day to unite.  Students, teachers, administrators, parents and community all have the same Purpose.  Patriots with a Purpose.

Get Moving.

Bike for Bagwell, Relay for Life

Next Friday, April 1st is a big event for HCS.  Over the past two years our Bike for Bagwell has raised over $8000 for the American Cancer Society.  This year we are expanding Bike for Bagwell to allow more opportunities to "Move" and honor/recognize cancer survivors.  HHS will host our Bike for Bagwell allowing employees and students to ride stationary bikes non-stop while asking for donations.  We will end our biking event with a pep rally  featuring our Spring sport teams, fine arts department and celebrating cancer survivors.  Following the Pep Rally, employees/students and community members will leave HHS with a police escort and walk to Homewood's Central Park for Relay for Life. The park will be a festive celebration of survivors!  Look for several of our very own HCS employees as they take the first lap (survivor lap) at 6pm.  Our goal is to have at least one HCS employee walking laps from 6 until midnight.  We will have "The Movement"  tent set up for you to enjoy.  Please bring friends, family members and your favorite tailgate game  if you wish.  Aside from the celebration, remember that 30 minutes = One Patriot Point!

Opportunities to MOVE this week include:

THURSDAY MORNING 6AM BASKETBALL.  AND FRIDAY MORNING 6AM SUPERSPINNERS!!!!!!

Spin classes will be limited to only 6am Friday morning for the next couple of weeks.  Paige Willcott will be the sub-Spin teacher.  Get ready for a challenging ride!

Sofa to Spirit Scamper

Good morning from the sideline of the 6am basketball league. I have the best seat in the house as I watch our employees run up and down the court.  HMS is well represented with Officer Fox, J. Ward and Cory (student teacher).  All corners of HHS are represented.  History, Math, Science, English, PE, Media Center, Guidance and Fine Arts.  This week's games seem a little competitive, but that's what brings out the best in all of us.  I have been promoting our Spirit Scamper for two weeks  and already there is a good number of registered runners and walkers.  If you are interested in a training plan to get you from the Sofa to the Scamper, please email me and I will be sure you are ready for May 7!  Have a great spring break and take advantage of opportunities to MOVE.

Mercedes and The Movement

What a difference a year makes!  Our participation in Mercedes Marathon was incredible this year=50 HCS employees  ran the course.  Eight relay teams, several half and full marathoners, a water and GU stop organized by Megan Kerstiens and HHS students/faculty.  Along the course, Matt's mom was one of the loudest cheerleaders.  If you don't know the history of Mercedes, take a moment to read the story on the Mercedes Marathon website.  Just an awesome experience with so many benefits. The modeling of healthy lifestyles is where The Movement really begins to create a culture change for our school community.  Thanks to all the participants and support crews throughout training and completing Mercedes.  We will organize a picture for all participants systemwide-please check email for time/place later this week.

Schedule for Movement opportunities this week:

Thursday 6am Basketball,  Thursday 4:15-5pm Spin, Thursday 3:45 Zumba

Friday 6am Superspinners

Scaleback, Mercedes, Basketball

Busy week in The Movement!  We have the CNP Divas, the Eskimos, Team G2G=Good To Great and so many more teams competing in Scaleback Alabama.  At HHS, it has been fun to watch teammates partner up and train.  One of our teams has decided to do a "walking lunch".  I noticed a member of our custodial staff walking laps with one of our counselors during their lunch break.  Keep up the good work.  Thursday morning basketball is up and running.  Get here on Thursdays @ 6am for some pick-up basketball.  I still have a job, even though I set a really hard screen on Dr. Cleveland.  =)  Mercedes Marathon is Sunday, February 13th.  I am so thrilled for our employees who will participate in this event.  Wear your medals and T-shirts to school on on Monday, February 14th.  We will get together for a team photo sometime during the week after Mercedes.

THE MOVEMENT INTRAMURALS

When is the last time you "played like a kid"?  As we become adults, we tend to work more and play less.  This is a factor in our lack of fitness.  The Movement will be providing opportunities for employees to play and compete.  Our first competition will be Scaleback Alabama.  I will be sending an email with an attachment explaining the program.  10 weeks, lose 10 pounds (or more), free of charge and you will have a chance for lots of prize money!  Please read the email and attachment coming to you later today!!!!!!    Classes next week are:    Monday 3:45-5:15-Movement Movie Ride. Come to Spin and see the original "Rocky".  Friday 6am SuperSpinner-RACE DAY!  Dance Trance will be in the dance room at HHS, Thursday @ 3:45.

MOVE IT!

Where are you?

I know it's cold outside but Zumba/Dance Trance and Spin class are inside and warm!   Last week, Alabamalaska (snow/ice) probably made it difficult to continue to pursue your New Year's resolution.  A great fitness goal is to make small changes in your lifestyle which become healthy habits forever.  What can you do to ensure success?  Maybe you have to pack your bag with your workout gear, place it in your car ahead of time.  Maybe you have to have a training partner to hold you accountable for your workout.  Whatever it takes to get you started and keep you going,  Just Do It.  Nike made a lot of money off of their logo.  But it really is pretty simple.  JUST DO IT.... Join The Movement!  Next week we will offer Spin Class on Thursday-4:15-5pm and Friday 6-6:45am.  Dance Trance will be Thursday @ 3:45pm.  MOVE!
