1990-2016

I moved to Bham in 1990 specifically to find a coaching job.  I always wanted to coach basketball, since 7th grade!

Basketball was really all I thought about.  I only wanted to teach so I could coach.  I started my career at Fairfield.  At the time, the girls program there was really behind other basketball programs in the area.  We didn't have any equipment and practiced with boy's basketballs which weren't even regulation size for girls.  My mom and dad funded a lot of the equipment needs for my team as well as locker room upgrades and paying for team meals.  I spent the first five years of my career trying to mold a team of kids together who really taught me more than I ever taught them.

My Fairfield Lady Tiger team after we defeated powerhouse Wenonah Lady Dragons in 1995.

In 1995 I got a call from Dr. Newton, who was formerly the assistant superintendent at Fairfield.  She had accepted a position as the assistant superintendent at Homewood and wanted me to interview for the girls basketball position.  Simultaneously, Terry Cooper the athletic director at Mountain Brook, also asked me to interview for the girls basketball job at MBHS.  I was offered both jobs, but didn't want to take either one.  I knew that MBHS was not the right fit.  It felt like a "private school masquerading as a public school" =)  I loved my team at Fairfield, we were on the verge of something BIG and in fact the Fairfield girls went to the Final Four with my assistant coach leading the way after I accepted the position at Homewood!!  I felt like I was taking a risk by coming to Homewood.  There were so many reasons to accept the job, but I was in my comfort zone at Fairfield.  I started working at Homewood and spent the first two years as the In School Suspension teacher.   It just didn't feel like where I was supposed to be.  I was bored and miserable sitting in ISS.  After two years of ISS, Ms. Lilly King - one of the PE teachers at HHS - asked me if I would like to change jobs with her.  I immediately said YES!!!!  I was headed back to the gym, to my comfort zone.  I coached three sports, in fact I was the head coach of three varsity sports.  Whew... that was tough.  I also completed my Master's in PE at that time.  After a few years of success with basketball and a Sweet 16 appearance -

Homewood Lady Patriots at Jacksonville State, Sweet 16.

I began to look closely at how I taught my PE classes.  I didn't feel like I ignored them, but I honestly wasn't doing my best.  I gave most of my energy to the girls basketball program.  One day in PE class, I needed to meet with my point guard.  I knew she had an elective, so I sent for her to come to the gym.  She and I talked for the entire class period.  My PE students were playing badminton, organized and didn't need my attention... at least I thought they didn't need my attention.  After class, one of my PE students came up to me and said, "Why don't you ever talk to us one-on-one?".  That question, completely broke my heart.  Those PE kids needed me just as much as my athletes, if not more.  I began to change my focus a bit.  Within a few weeks of the encounter with that student, Dr. Chappell emailed about the NBCT process.  I went to the organizational meeting, which Mr. Ed Larson led.  I decided that I would give it a shot.  I wanted to improve as a teacher, and this would allow me to really look closely at how I taught my classes.  I am not the best grammatically, but had help from home-thank you Jami Wadkins, and Rebecca Stallings was assigned as my mentor for the NBCT process.  With lots of help, I passed!!!!  It was the turning point of my career.  During PE class, I focused on those kids.  I waited until basketball practice to focus on my athletes.  If you are a coach, I challenge you to do the same.  Give your best to your students while you have them.  Give your best to your athletes, while you have them.  A few years passed, and once again, Dr. Chappell sent out an email about the administrative cohort at Samford University.  I applied, was accepted and completed the administrative program.  Next up, I started thinking about a leadership position.  The timing was perfect!!!  Susan Cook, our girl's AD at the time was retiring.  I had more experience than anyone who applied.  I just knew the job was mine.  I couldn't wait to start leading our girls program.  I went into the interview feeling great.  I had coached varsity volleyball, tennis, basketball, softball, and cross country.  Dr. Winches and Mr. Carlisle were the two people who interviewed me.  At the end of the interview, Dr. Winches stepped out and Mr. Carlisle asked me to stick around for a few minutes.  I sat in his office and listened to him explain that the job would not be offered to me, but instead Carol Chesnutt would be coming from Simmons Middle School.  I was devastated,  crushed, humiliated and angry, so angry that I began to pursue other jobs.  I was offered an assistant basketball coaching job at Samford University and also the head basketball job at Shades Valley High School.  I didn't accept either job.  Instead, I accepted defeat, but didn't let it define me.  I lost the job to Carol but I won a career-changing lesson.  I learned that sometimes bad things happen to good people and you just have to keep up the good fight.  It's not easy to come to work knowing that you lost your position to someone else.  It's not easy accepting defeat.  My response was to feel sorry for myself for a few weeks and then begin to look closely at my professional life.  After 19 years of coaching, I needed a change.  I didn't know where to turn, but felt like something different was out there waiting for me.  When Dr. Cleveland and Dr. Maddox approached me about the idea of a wellness program, I was once again, asked to step out of my comfort zone, which was frightening.  I walked into the locker room the same day, looked at my basketball team and explained to them that I would not be coaching them next season.  I didn't have a job description for wellness, didn't know the expectations but was willing to take a risk.  Thank goodness I did.  The past seven years have been incredible. Coaching and leading all piled up into one happy place.
BCC Team, 2016

Defeat led me to wellness, literally and figuratively.  Homewood is a great place.  I know you hear that all of the time and sometimes take it for granted.  Some of you may not be in your happy place professionally, but my story is a testament to the fact that the opportunity is always there in Homewood.  You will always have difficult parents, difficult students and difficult situations in this profession.  You will always have challenges and change.  The best lesson learned is to accept defeat when it comes your way, learn from it and move on.  Your next-best life is waiting on you.

I'll be retiring at the end of this semester.  I'll continue to work with wellness on a project-based status and continue to support each of you in your pursuit to be your best version of you.

We have arrived at our annual one mile per day streak!  Run or walk one mile daily starting Wednesday and ending on New Year's Eve.

  2. Finish date, Saturday, Dec. 31.
  3. Run or walk at least one mile per day
Bonus rule, (not required but fun):  Tweet your progress tagging @hwdmoves along the way.

Finisher T-shirts will be awarded if we have at least 50 employees participating.  Encourage your co-workers, friends and family to join in.  At the completion of the event, you will receive an email to order your t-shirt.  We must have at least 50 participants for the t-shirts to happen.

How did you do?

One of the greatest assets any of us can have is the ability to reflect, self-assess, learn from any shortcomings and repeat successful behavior.  Take a moment to think back over the past week and your approach to wellness.  Did you make some good choices or did you begin a downward spiral that you need to quickly address?  The good news is we are still early in our holiday season.  If you feel a bit out of control, start NOW with a plan for success moving forward!

Click here to post your Patriot Points.  Create a goal to score 6 Patriot Points weekly for scheduled exercise.  If you count steps, create a goal to improve your step count by 2000 steps daily.

Small changes can create big results.

Reflect, self-assess, make a plan, follow-through with the plan, repeat!

This week will begin the holiday season.  A few years ago I blogged about "The Eating Season" in reference to the holidays.  Each year we celebrate this time of the year with food, family, fun, football and quite possibly a few extra pounds.  While I certainly agree that it's necessary to enjoy a few extra treats, it's also a good idea to have a game plan going into the next few weeks to be sure you can enjoy the festivities and feel good about yourself after the eating season comes to an end.  Check out some quick tips from Bob Harper, trainer from The Biggest Loser.

Take some time away from schoolwork, enjoy your time with family and friends, enjoy the reason for the season and be sure to take care of yourself along the way.

Keep Moving.

State Champions for all of us..

Did you miss it?  This weekend our varsity cross country teams, both boys and girls, won state titles.  We have a DYNASTY not just a program but a championship producing program.  Check out the write-up in the Homewood Star.  I know you hear about a lot of great things that our kids do, academically, athletically, fine arts and so much more.  And, I realize that you always hear this, "We could not get those kids across the stage at graduation if it weren't for every person along the way from HCS who helps create the path for our kids." That is so true!  And it's true in our running/walking community.  Lars, Josh, Tom, Deanna, Genie, John, Justin, Eric and all of the coaches deserve a shout out.  Incredible work with our kids.  BUT,  YOU, yeah you, the person reading this also deserves a shout out.  If you are reading this, that means that you are part of The Movement.  You read the blog, post your Patriot Points, and do your part to make healthy lifestyle choices.  That's modeling wellness, that's setting an example for others, that's part of being well, that's part of a dynasty-the Homewood community of walkers, runners and people who exercise.   Congratulations to our cross country program, congratulations to you and as always Keep Moving...

On a mission

Fill in the blank.  "The Mission of Homewood City Schools is to _____________________"  I'll bet most every employee can perfectly state our mission statement without one mistake.  But do you LIVE it?  Do you empower students by providing an example of what unique potential actually looks like?  Check out this picture-Mission Statement at top of image, Walktober plan and weekly updates at bottom of image.
Genie's Plan

This is an example of one of our employees who literally WALKS her TALK.  If you stood next to Genie Christian during the month of Walktober, you probably know that this picture is her game plan for accomplishing her goal of not only winning Walktober but also setting an example of wellness for employees and students.  She followed a three step process for success:
  1. Created a game plan.
  2. Posted the plan so others could follow her journey and be inspired=accountability.
  3. Updated the plan each week to chart her progress.
What are your goals?  Are you reaching your unique potential?

BE INSPIRED AND BE INSPIRATIONAL.

Congratulations to Jana Watts and Cheryl Polk for winning their respective Walktober categories!  All three competitors will be awarded their Walktober trophy in the upcoming weeks.

Morning Crew, 16 Rounds!

HCS employees are kinda awesome.  The Morning Crew, pictured above, represents that awesomeness.   Last week this team completed a 16 round workout to honor Alison Hill and her completion of 16 rounds of chemotherapy.  The workout was created by their team leader, Dr. Maddox who has transitioned back to Coach Maddox for the Morning Crew for the past few years. His workouts are always good but this time he put a lot of thought into each and every facet.  Each movement of this workout was detailed for a specific purpose honoring Alison.  It wasn't an easy workout, but nothing to compare to what Alison has been through.

The movements involved in the workout represented Alison's fight. For instance, push-ups and pull-ups signifying pushing through adversity, pulling yourself up when you are down.  Running the hill from the gym parking lot all the way up to the top level at HHS, represented Alison HILL!  The entire workout was a partner workout, representing the fact that along the way Alison has relied on the help of family and friends to get her through tough times.  And then there was the ringing of the bell.  After completion of her chemotherapy, Alison walked down the long hall from the infusion clinic at Kirkland and "RANG THE BELL"!!!!!  Check out her big smile as she rang the bell at Kirkland clinic!

After completing the hill run, the morning crew rang a bell which hung by a pink bandana in the doorway, under the words "Patriot Power".   I'll add to the alliteration, Patriot Power/Pink/Positive thinking/special People.

If you are still making excuses about your wellness, maybe you should consider this as your "kick in the backside."  We only have one chance to live our lives.  What kind of a fight are you fighting?  Are you down for the count or are you willing to go the distance to be at your personal best?

KEEP MOVING!

Walktober Heats Up!

Walktober, largest number of participants EVAH

Over 100 employees are taking a walk on the wild side in Walktober.  Each worksite is represented well in our competition.  Coming soon, you will see a tab at the top of The Movement Blog featuring our three levels of competition and a leaderboard for each level.

T-shirts on Mondays for the YEAR

Big news from the admin team at each worksite.  Weekend warriors (employees who compete in a race or other event) have the opportunity to wear jeans and the t-shirt from the competitive event the following Monday!  So, if you decide to run in a 5K or other competitive event every weekend, you could wear jeans and a tshirt every Monday!  That's AWESOME!  Sport those finisher t-shirts and model wellness and lifetime fitness for our students.

Shout-out to employees who are taking advantage of classes offered at the Mt. Brook YMCA.  Our attendance is building!  Talk to M. Drummond, M. Wilson, K. Dutton, G. Miller or T. Colley if ya wanna know more from an actual participant.  Y Cross, Y Core and Y Ride classes are available after school on Monday-Wednesday but a huge menu of classes are also offered across the metro area at any of the YMCA branches!  Here's a link to the class options.

Team Edgewood for the WIN

Congratulations to Team Edgewood for their first weekly win of the PPC.  Big win for that team but all of our teams deserve a pat on the back for consistency this year.  Keep posting those points.

Walktober, Walk to School and #EESBestMe takes it to the garden

If you have noticed your co-workers making extra laps in the halls, or walking to meet with a co-worker instead of emailing or maybe even getting in a walking meeting, there's a reason why.  These behaviors are considered normal to anyone who participates in Walktober.  Be sure to log in your mileage on the Patriot Point Challenge form.  Our theme this year for HCS has to do with the fact that our employees are willing to go the extra mile #hcsExtraMile Employees are taking extra steps to be at their best!

Here are some pics from Walk to School last week!

And how about Edgewood Elementary and their #eebestme Movement?!  The Edgewood community came together at EES this past weekend to recreate their garden and improve their school campus.  This is another example of our educators being willing to go the #hcsExtraMile  Special shout out to Dr. Kiser and the employees at EES for making an impact.  BAM!

Post those points and log those Walktober miles.

Walking in Homewood

Did you know that Homewood is the most walkable city in our state?  October is Walktober for HCS employees.   High mileage runners and strictly walkers will not compete against each other this year which will make the playing field a bit more competitive.  First chance to log your mileage will be Oct. 10th.  Read the end of week blogpost from last week for details!

Wednesday, Oct. 5th is Walk/Bike to School Day.  This year instead of a system-wide event, each work-site is challenged to create the best scenario for their campus.  Walk as a team or simply walk as a soloist.  Be sure to use the hashtag #hcsExtraMile to highlight your walking on social media.

YMCA CLASSES BEGIN MONDAY, OCT. 3rd
MUST HAVE 6 PARTICIPANTS!
  • Monday-Y Cross
  • Tuesday-Y Core
  • Wednesday-Y Ride

Time frame for all HCS will be 3:45-4:15PM with free childcare provided.  Nationally certified instructors will lead each class.  The facility is AMAZING.

WALKTOBER

Walktober is a month-long challenge to determine which employee covers the greatest distance during the month of October.  Any tracking device will qualify you for this event. Participants may use any fitness tracker or smartphone to document mileage.

This year our competition will feature three levels.
  1. Lightly Active=This level includes athletes who complete light to moderate exercise 2-3 times per week.  Runners are NOT included in this level, strictly walkers and beginner exercisers.
  2. Active=This level includes athletes who are occasional runners and regular exercisers.  Running isn't your primary focus, but you may include a few miles in your week.  No more than 10 miles of running per week is allowed in this level.
  3. Very Active=This level includes athletes who include running or walking as a regular part of their exercise routine.  Weekly distance can exceed 10 miles.  If you devote time each week for walking or running a distance of greater than 10 miles you should compete at this level.
The competition will begin October 1st and finish up on Oct. 31st.  You will log your mileage each week on the same form used for Patriot Points.

Mileage Dates
Enter MIleage
Entry 1 (Oct. 1-Oct. 9)

Once you determine your level as Lightly Active, Active or Advanced you are committed to that level.  As the competition director, I will make adjustments if I see that someone is covering a distance that qualifies them for a higher level.  This will allow Walktober to be competitive at all three levels.  We will have awards for the winner of each category and each competitor can earn badges along the way!

Make October your month to challenge yourself and have fun while competing against co-workers.

PPC Big Scoreboard Update

THE BIG SCOREBOARD STATS:

SCES=53
EES=39
HHS=33
HKES=32
HMS and HBOE=26

Congrats to SCES for winning week three of the PPC.  I thought it might be necessary to be sure everyone understands the scoring system for our competition.  Each week when you post your Patriot Points, I collect that data and enter it into a spreadsheet which calculates our standings in the PPC.  Special shout-out to Dr. Latta Johnston for creating this spreadsheet 8 years ago.  We have used the formula each year to determine weekly winners and the overall winner for the PPC.

There are four areas in which your team can score points:
  1. Average number of points scored
  2. Weekly improvement of average points scored
  3. Percentage of employees who post points
  4. Weekly improvement of employees who post points.
Even if you only have ONE scheduled exercise session resulting in ONE Patriot Point, you are a very important part of your team's stats.  SCES had 43% employee participation last week resulting in a win for their team!  Each team is ranked and can score from 1-6 points per for each of the four areas listed above.

30 minutes of scheduled exercise =1 Pt.
Fitness classes lead by an instructor=2 pts. per half hour
Competitive events:  5K=3pts, 10K=6pts, half marathon=12 pts, marathon=24 pts, Century ride=24 pts, Sprint triathlon=10, half-ironman=20 or ironman=50

Bottom line..... POST YOUR POINTS....Keep Moving......... Be Awesome.

First opportunity to post-Season 8

POST THOSE PATRIOT POINTS. HERE IS THE LINK!

Today is the first day to post Patriot Points for season 8.  Think back on your week of movement.  Starting on Monday, August 29th and finishing up on Monday evening, September 5th.  (extra day this week thanks to Labor Day) Add up the number of minutes you participated in SCHEDULED exercise.  Cleaning house, mowing the lawn and other daily physical activities do not count as Patriot Points.  If you didn't participate in any scheduled exercise exercise last week, that is an indicator that you aren't doing what you should do to be the best you can be!  Make a goal this year to improve the number of minutes you participate in scheduled exercise.

Who will be on the leaderboard?

Be sure to check out the Individual Leaderboard located in the menu at the top of The Movement blog.  I'll collect the top 25 individual point achievers weekly and place their name on this list.

Opportunities to move.  We have fitness classes for you.
Strength training, Yoga and cycle classes are offered weekly.  Check out The Movement calendar in the menu above to see when and where you can get fit on campus.  Cycle class is Thursday at HHS, we have a minimum of 6 participants to create a ride.  BE THERE!

Monday morning, September 12-WBRC Fox 6 and JehJeh Pruitt will be LIVE for a feature story about an incredible opportunity coming to Homewood City School employees.  I'll send out another blog update later in the week with details.  Exercise Monday with JehJeh and The Movement!

We are back at it- "Empowering students to reach their unique potential."  What about you reaching your potential? We can't be what we need to be for students if we aren't the best version of ourselves. Make year eight of The Movement the year that YOU reach your potential. Wellness is about physical health (nutrition and fitness) but it's also about so much more.

Think about where you stand in each area of wellness.  Set a few goals to help you reach your personal best by May of 2017.

Opportunities to Move:
Be sure to check out The Movement calendar tab in the menu item above to find out about Yoga, Strength Training and Cycle classes for employees.  If you need more info, email me and I'll gladly explain in detail what each class involves.

RECORD BREAKING YEAR! 2016 WLHwd 5K and Fun Run=600+ participants

We LOVE Homewood

I don't know who thought of the title of our day to celebrate our city but they had amazing insight into how the community actually feels about our small town.  Over 600 runners and walkers participated in the We Love Homewood 5K and Little Patriot Fun Run.  It was a record-breaking year which included more participation and the addition of the Spirit Of the Streets, neighborhood spirit contest, added even more excitement to our 5K.  Neighbors came out early with decorations, cheering, a screaming electric guitar (Thank you Laeri!), banjos (Thank you Mr. Tedrow/Hwd Music), a live rock band (Thank you Indian Summer) and so much more!  I'll be posting pics collected by Rebecca Shields who organized golf cart photographers along the course, Scott Butler who is always everywhere taking pics and would love to have your pics also.  Feel free to email them to me our share on our We Love Homewood 5K Facebook page.  Share the love....

While we were celebrating our city our track teams were competing and WINNING a state title and runner up title.  #welovehwd

Mr. Pence was selected as the "Quality of Life" recipient and awarded the Key to the City from Mayor McBrayer.  #welovehwd

What a day, what a weekend and a great reason to celebrate.

Patriot Point Challenge:
Congrats to SCES for another weekly win.  This will be our final week to post Patriot Points for the year.  I'll email the Patriot Point Leaders later this week to announce our winner of PPC 2016.

POST THOSE POINTS

We Love Homewood WEEK

Loving Homewood is easy to do.  Everyone who is a part of our city can easily find something that is reason to celebrate.  Anyone who knows anything about our city understands that a HUGE part of what makes Homewood easy to love is the school system.  A great way to celebrate that success is We Love Homewood Day.  I've been promoting the We Love Homewood 5K for a few weeks and YES.. there is still time to register online through Thursday or on site at packet pick-up from 3PM to 6PM at Homewood Recreation Center.  Hopefully, you will decide to start your day with the 5K walk/run.  Even if you don't make it to the 5K, you should make an effort to check out the We Love Homewood Festival in the Park.  Arts and crafts, food and beverage, entertainment from HHS band, a silent auction, a parade, a street dance and a free concert near Edgewood Creamery by Chevy 6!

Don't miss out..
